GENIOPLASTY

WHEN YOU HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION , IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE OUR PEOPLE AND OFFICES, AND MEET OUR DOCTORS, PLEASE DO.

Aesthetic genioplasty typically is performed to add size and contour to a receding chin.  The patient usually has a normal bite, or dental occlusion, which will not be affected by chin augmentation.  The extent of the procedure depends on what changes are desired and what your surgeon deems appropriate.  On your surgeon's recommendation you may be operated on in the surgeons office, in an outpatient facility or you may be admitted to the hospital.

Genioplasty usually is performed under local anesthesia which numbs the area around the chin.  However, when it is done in conjunction with another procedure, general anesthesia may be used.  If a general anesthetic is administered you will sleep through the entire operation.

There are two basic approaches to genioplasty.  In some cases it may be best to move the chin bone.  in this technique, the surgeon makes an incision inside the mouth to gain access to the chin bone.  The surgeon then makes  a horizontal cut through the bone.  The lower portion of the separated bone is moved forward and wired in position.  The incision in the mouth is closed with sutures and an external pressure dressing is generally placed over the chin.  Since surgery is performed through an internal incision, the patient has no visible scarring.

When only a modest degree of chin augmentation is required to provide contour, the surgeon may use a plastic chin implant, or prosthesis.  in this technique, the incision is made either inside the mouth or externally on the underside of the chin.  Working through the incision, the surgeon creates a pocket above the chin bone and under the muscles, and inserts an appropriately sized prosthesis  or chin implant.  The incision us closed and a pressure dressing applied.  The resultant scar from the external  incision is negligible.

After surgery,  there is some soreness and discomfort which is easily controlled by medication.  The surgeon may advise a liquid diet for a day or two following surgery.  The patient is generally up and about the same day as surgery and back to work and normal activities within a few days. The dressing usually is removed within a week of surgery.
