Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid naturally occurring in sugar cane. It penetrates the skin and loosens thickened surface layers that appear as dry, rough, scaling skin. As the uppermost skin is sloughed away, skin with a smoother texture and healthier appearance is revealed.
Gly Derm is a skin care program that uses glycolic acid to improve skin tone, as well as to smooth fine wrinkles and diminish skin discoloration and blemishes.
It has been known for years that glycolic acid can improve skin wrinkling, dryness, roughness, flaking, scaling, and elasticity. However, most people find plain glycolic acid, particularly at higher concentrations, to be very irritating when applied to skin.
Gly derm glycolic acid is esterified, a process that combines glycolic acid with fruit alcohols. This produces gentle esters which maintain their full strength but are much less irritating to the skin.
The Gly Derm system combines esterified glycolic acid applications in your doctor's office with an at-home skin care routine. Your dermatologist or plastic surgeon determines the strength that's right for your in-office applications which continue weekly for about six weeks. during this time, strengths ranging from 20% to 70% may be used. After approximately six weeks, you will continue with freshening peels once every month.
At-home follow-up care included daily skin cleansing and moisturizing with Gly Derm products that maintain the beautifying effects of glycolic acid esters. Lower strengths of esterified glycolic acid in home-care products continue to enhance the improvements your skin receives form the in-office applications.
Step 1 is the application of esterified glycolic acid in your plastic surgeon's office. These peels continue weekly for about six weeks.
Step 2 is nightly cleansing with Gly Derm Gentle Cleanser followed by the application of Gly Derm Cream, Lotion, Lotion Lite, and Solution. These products contain esterified glycolic acid; your plastic surgeon will recommend which one is right for your skin type.
Step 3 is daily cleansing with Gly Derm Gentle Cleanser and application of a Gly Derm moisturizing product form the Hydrotone line or the Vernix line of moisturizers. If you use make-up, finish with your own water based cosmetics.
